Next Step

I thought i had everything sorted out how i was going to take the next step to become a developer.
Recently I started at Free Code Camp and completed the first section on HTML, CSS and Bootstrap.
This was going to be my ticket to become a web developer, I was about to start on the first project which was to go on my portfolio but then something happened.
At the Consulting firm where I work we have career coaches to help us reach our goals at the firm. This is not as good as it sounds. My career coach who was also my manager (read conflict of interest) was not a good coach. Giving little to no advise promising some day i will move up to developer but I knew he didn't mean it. I can't say he didn't help he kept telling me to work on my Oracle Certified Associate (OCA) Certification.
While Java my interesting at one time I realised it wasn't my thing, i want to be a Front End Dev. Also Certifications are not looked upon well in the real world, it's not that it's wasy but some do brain dumps to pass while others use it in lieu of experience. This is not motivating to begin with. Further killing my enthusiasm is having to spending so much time revising basics I can just google when i need to know.
I decided to change coaches and my new coach who is not my direct manager, is much more helpful but did say it will be 6 to 12 months to start moving out (eye roll). I was hoping to get the ok to focus on Front end with hope of moving to the digital team. This did not go to plan and he suggested finishing my Java Certification and sometime next year start taking in small Java tasks.
So this is my dilemma, work on finishing my cert which is of dubious value other than proving I finished something. Or to focus on web dev to get a job outside of the firm, only problem with this I look bad to my coach who is willing to help because it appears I did not put in effort.
I don't mean to sound lazy or that i'm complaining, it's been a while that ive been trying in vein to become a dev just to have life go in a different direction.
Next blog I will talk about my decision and progress i'm making. I promise future posts will be less whiney more on track of the topic.
